Denmark (WA) – Slow Travel, Rock Pools & Chicken Salt
Esperance to Denmark: 528 km | approx. 5.5 hours
From Denmark to Nannup – Curves, Pines, and Culinary Questions
After days of long roads, Outback dust, and winding coastal drives, we arrive in Denmark.
Australia can be loud and wild – Denmark is the opposite. Small, quiet, a little dreamy.
It’s the kind of place where you sit on a wooden porch with a cappuccino, kookaburras laughing in the trees, and you suddenly forget what day it is.
Slow travel, Australian style – and just our pace.
Where Breakfast Tells Stories: Terri & David
We stay at the Sensational Heights B&B – and the name says it all.

Not just for the view, but for Terri and David – warm-hearted hosts with plenty of stories to share.
If you’re looking for a quiet breakfast here, good luck – David loves to chat. And Terri even more.
The breakfast? Always a surprise.
On day one: a fluffy omelet – wonderful!
On day two… things get creative: five grilled carrots with tomato, a few asparagus spears, topped with a fried egg – and a slice of bacon clearly left on the grill a bit too long.
„Sorry,“ says David, deadpan. “Burnt it today.”
Well – it’s the thought that counts. And the humor comes free.

Bonus tip from David:
“Don’t get too close to the kangaroos. The boomers have more muscle than Schwarzenegger. They’ll tear you apart.”
Not that we planned on boxing with one, but thanks anyway, David.

William Bay National Park – Where the Sea Calms Down
Just a few kilometers outside of Denmark lies William Bay National Park – a place where nature speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression.
Tucked between massive granite boulders are hidden bays, turquoise water, and a feeling of: “Let’s never leave.”

The most famous spot? Without question: Greens Pool.
A magically calm bay, protected by giant smooth boulders, where the water is so clear and peaceful it feels like a natural infinity pool – no hotel, no chlorine, no noise. Just you, the sea, and the sunlight.
Elephant Rocks

Rock formations that really do look like elephants bathing in the surf.
Climb through the rocks and you’ll be rewarded with a picture-perfect view of the open ocean. Camera out – and take a deep breath.
Tip: Go early – especially if you want to have these places all to yourself. And don’t forget your swimsuit!

Heading On: Nannup
After two relaxing days in peaceful Denmark, we continue into the heart of the southwest: Nannup – a charming little town between forest, river, and rolling hills.

The road is a joy for any road trip fan: curvy, green, scenic – if it weren’t for one special Aussie traffic species…
Along the way, we keep meeting them:
Road Trains
These rolling giants – often 50 meters or longer – are the backbone of Australian transport. And they do not brake. Like, ever.
Tip: Keep your distance, overtake only with a lot of foresight – and never underestimate how long it takes to get past one of these monsters.
With every bend, our excitement grows – and eventually, Nannup appears: sleepy, charming, a little out of time. And with a flavor question waiting to be answered…
A Place to Breathe
Nannup is quiet, a little dreamy. Old wooden houses, a river, lavender bushes, colorful signs.
The kind of place where time slows down – and that’s just right.

Fish & Chips with a Hint of Identity Crisis
A quick stop in town, hunger kicks in – and what better choice than classic Aussie fish & chips?
Ordered, sun on our faces, all good… until the innocent question at the counter:
“Do you want chicken salt with that?”
Chicken… what?
We nod politely – not wanting to look like clueless tourists – and wait in curiosity.
Soon the fries arrive. Golden. And they smell… like rotisserie chicken?
Yes, that’s chicken salt: a savory, slightly sweet seasoning blend that contains no chicken but makes everything taste like roast chicken.
It’s an Aussie classic – and an acquired taste.

“Tastes like fries raised in the backseat of a rotisserie truck.”
