Los Angeles, City of Longing, City of Shadows

Los Angeles – City of Longing, City of Shadows

Magnificent light displays in the sky do their best to help us forget the strains of a long journey. Even in business class — twelve hours are still twelve hours.

But then — finally — there it is beneath us: the vast, shimmering sprawl called Los Angeles. The Pacific glistens like a promise, the mountains behind — majestic and silent. And in between: a mosaic of dreams, concrete, palm trees, and stories.

Los Angeles — flickering, vast, mysterious. A city of illusions and truths.

Touch down!

Our luggage rolls quickly off the belt, immigration is smooth — Los Angeles welcomes us with open arms. And yet, the moment I step onto American soil, I can feel it: this isn’t a city you simply arrive in. It asks something of you. Maybe openness. Maybe humility. Or maybe just the willingness to embrace contradiction.

“Travel isn’t an escape from life — it’s turning toward it, in all its complexity.”
– Edith for Wanderlust Knows No Age

I feel that turn toward life here more than anywhere. Los Angeles isn’t a destination — it’s a sensation. Something you can’t quite hold on to. A feeling somewhere between exhilaration and exhaustion, beauty and overwhelm. Maybe that’s what keeps pulling me back.

Los Angeles – Not Love at First Sight

The first time, it was just a layover on our way to Hawaii. And honestly? I was overwhelmed. The sheer size, the contrasts, the distance between everything — it all felt like too much.

But since Lena moved here, we’ve been coming back regularly. And over time, something changed. It wasn’t love at first sight — but a quiet, growing connection.

What reconciled me with this city weren’t the famous sights, but the small stories in between:
Santa Monica at sunset. An old woman and her chihuahua at a bus stop in Echo Park. A quiet moment in Pacific Palisades.
And Lena, picking us up at the airport — every single time.

Los Angeles in passing: palms, pavement, and ocean — the city in all its contradictions.

Reuniting with Lena – a Familiar Moment

The arrival hall is crowded, noisy, a little world of its own. I don’t spot her right away. Reinhold nudges me: “She’s right there! Edith — right there!”

And then I see her. Lena. Quiet, almost shy — and yet so strong, so grounded. In her hug, there’s everything: the joy of reunion, the comfort of togetherness, the promise of time.
And already — very faintly — the whisper of the next goodbye begins to stir in the back of my mind. I push it away. Not yet.

Reunion, closeness, letting go. Sometimes, goodbye is already near — even when the heart hasn’t caught up yet.

Los Angeles – Beauty with Shadows

Los Angeles wears many faces. It’s a place where light and shadow walk side by side. Where hope and disillusionment seem oddly at peace with one another. Maybe that’s what touches me so deeply.

It’s hard to name, but L.A. carries a kind of melancholy that only reveals itself once you’re in it. Maybe it’s the heat. The distance. The unfulfilled promises.
Or maybe it’s the thousands of people who gave everything here — and still got lost along the way.

I recently read an interview with hotelier André Balazs, owner of the Chateau Marmont. He said, “Los Angeles isn’t just sunny — it’s a little bit sad too.”

And I thought: that’s exactly it. This city lives in the conditional tense. It’s a dream — sometimes real, sometimes fragile.

A Few of Our Highlights – Between Glamour and Emotion

  • Driving the iconic Pacific Coast Highway: Santa Monica, Malibu, El Matador

  • Hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains and exploring art at the Getty Villa

  • An afternoon at the Getty Museum – beauty and perspective above the city

  • Movie magic at Universal Studios – even if you’re not a film buff
  • Window-shopping on Rodeo Drive, marveling at Beverly Hills

  • The bohemian spirit of Topanga Canyon – as if time had stopped

  • Breakfast at Duke’s in Malibu – with the ocean just a breath away

  • The little delivery robots – futuristic, charming, and just so L.A.

  • Griffith Park – vast views, winding paths, and Hollywood lore

  • Pacific Palisades – elegance, quiet, and breathtaking ocean air
  • Evenings at the Farmers Market and a stroll through The Grove

  • A day trip to Catalina Island – a world of its own

  • Moments of stillness in the cemeteries of L.A.: Hollywood Forever, Forest Lawn, Westwood Village

Here lies what once sparkled — and what still shines. Hollywood Forever.

Final Reflection

I often wonder why this city moves me so deeply. Maybe because it’s so imperfect. So overwhelmed — like all of us sometimes. Full of contrasts, of longing, of stories never fully told.

Los Angeles isn’t a place you can truly hold on to. It’s something you get to feel — for a while.
And maybe that’s its greatest magic: nothing stays the same, but something always stays with you.

“We often don’t recognize the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”
