Vermont. Familiar ground, vibrant trees – and a piece of home

Familiar ground, vibrant trees – and a piece of home

Vermont. My goodness, so familiar.

We lived on the East Coast for five and a half years – in one of the New England states, not far from here. We often came up from Connecticut to Vermont. To experience the full blaze of the Indian Summer or to shop at the outlet stores in Manchester. That was years ago – and yet it feels like we were never really gone.

The air is crisp, the autumn colors glow in shades of red, gold, and orange. The hills roll gently, the villages display white porches and painted shutters. Vermont hasn’t changed. Or perhaps: it’s exactly that – it hasn’t changed.

We’re staying at the Arlington Inn

After so many no-frills highway hotels, it’s a place with character. Old wooden floors, soft carpets, gentle light. A house with stories. It fits this moment: a pause, a moment of remembering, a temporary return home.

A historic inn full of charm – the Arlington Inn welcomes us with tradition, elegance, and autumn magic. Classic on the outside, warm and full of stories inside.

Stopovers, just like before

No apple pie this time. But we went to Manchester and discovered a restaurant hidden inside an antique store. Turkish cuisine. The food: simply delicious. And the young server from Turkey was happy to meet fellow Europeans in what he called this “remote corner.” He had already endured one of the long, cold winters – but that didn’t come as a surprise to us.

As the morning fog lifts, we continue our journey.

A touch of New England in autumn: pumpkins at the market, a stately home in the morning sun – and a surprisingly delicious Turkish meal in a hidden little restaurant.
