A Place Above – Topanga Canyon

A roadside encounter:
A silent observer in the Santa Monica Mountains – calm, curious, and oh so Topanga.
Originally, we just wanted a relaxed drive through the Santa Monica Mountains.
But then it suddenly appeared – like something from another time: Topanga.
A dreamy place above the world. In the language of the Tongva people, Topanga means “a place above.” And that’s exactly how it feels.
Topanga isn’t beautiful in the classic sense – but it has atmosphere.
Untamed, quirky, independent – this is where California’s old bohemian spirit still lingers:
People with homemade philosophies, wind chimes in the trees, colorful hippie houses nestled among oaks and cacti.
Dennis Hopper, Neil Young, and Uschi Obermaier once called this place home.
And yes – even Charles Manson began his dark story here, casting a shadow over an otherwise peaceful canyon.
The canyon itself is spectacular:
Steep hillsides, fossil-filled sandstone, an open-air theater hidden in the forest, and organic cafés scented with incense.
A narrow road snakes along the cliffside – and every now and then, the view opens up to the sea.
We drive slowly. Time seems to do the same.
Topanga isn’t a place to rush through – but one to marvel at, linger in, and ponder.
Maybe the magic really is “above” – somewhere between the trees, the stories, and the spirits.
In Topanga, it’s not just light that gathers in the trees – but stories, too: painted, stitched, glued, and just a little bit mad.

Skulls in sun hats, shrunken heads on rooftops, raccoon caps in souvenir
size – one gets the feeling Topanga doesn’t take itself too seriously. Thankfully.
