Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild – Rosy Dreams on Cap Ferrat

This time, we weren’t behind the wheel – no rental car, no GPS voice, no exasperated “Turn right? Now?” in the middle of traffic.

Vanessa chauffeured us in Grandma’s heirloom – a rickety old VW Golf – all the way to the gates of the villa. And as the car wheezed to a halt in the parking lot, a pastel-coloured dream world unfolded before our eyes.

A garden like a stage set
The view across the reflecting pool towards the pink-hued Villa Ephrussi – framed by palms, mountains, and Mediterranean grace.

A palace in pink

Mon Dieu,” I whisper as we cross the terrace. Everything feels like a film set – and yet, it was the real dream of Béatrice de Rothschild. A woman of impeccable taste, abundant wealth, and a grand vision.

Inspired by nearby Villa Kérylos, she created her own retreat. The result: an architectural jewel, furnished in the “Rothschild style” – a refined, eclectic blend of fine art, antiques, and precious furniture. You can almost see her: dressed in flowing silk, champagne in hand, welcoming guests for a lavish weekend.

A legacy in elegance

Béatrice de Rothschild came from one of Europe’s most influential banking dynasties – educated, refined, and a passionate collector. Construction of the villa began in 1905, with architect Aaron Messiah bringing her vision to life.

She curated a remarkable collection of art, porcelain, tapestries, and decorative treasures – all lovingly preserved today. Upon her death in 1934, she bequeathed the villa and its contents to the Académie des Beaux-Arts – a gift for generations to come.

Gardens beyond imagination

As breathtaking as the villa is, the true magic lies outside – in the gardens. Or rather, in nine of them. Spanning seven hectares, Béatrice created a botanical journey around the world: Spanish, Florentine, Japanese…

A mirror-like water basin stretches from the villa to a white rotunda, framed by palm trees and sculptures. Suddenly, classical music fills the air. Fountains begin to dance. We pause. We breathe. We smile.

Sailing through gardens

It’s said Béatrice wanted her garden walks to feel like sailing. Each space a memory of her travels. And truly – every step is a passage, every turn a new chapter.

We drift through the landscape, finding a shaded bench overlooking Villefranche. For a moment, time seems to stand still.

Sustainability with style

What touched us: the gardens are maintained without herbicides. Instead, essential oils like clove and lemon are used – a harmony of elegance and environmental care.

Summer evenings & historic atmosphere

If you want to experience the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in a very special light, don’t miss the Nocturnes Estivales: From mid-July to the end of August, the garden is transformed on selected evenings into a romantic stage – with music, lights and open-air picnics under the stars.

Dates 2025: Every Thursday and Sunday from July 14 to August 31. Attendance is limited – Tickets & info here.

A place with history

Built between 1907 and 1912 by the eccentric art collector Béatrice de Rothschild, the villa was bequeathed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1934 and opened to the public as a museum in 1938.

The nine themed gardens – from French to Japanese styles – reflect Béatrice’s cosmopolitan flair and her quest for beauty. Today, the villa ranks among the most remarkable sights on the Côte d’Azur.

 A feast for all senses

Visiting the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild was more than a cultural outing – it was a dive into a world of beauty, refinement, and quiet splendor. A place that captures the essence of the Riviera – and lets you carry a little piece of it home in your heart.
