Menton. The Lemon Capital

Menton – The Lemon Capital

“When life gives you lemons, order the lobster tail.”
– Ziad K. Abdelnour

Welcome to Menton – where lemons are a way of life and everything feels a little brighter, more fragrant, and unmistakably Mediterranean.
Right on the Italian border, this city is the yellow heart of the Côte d’Azur – and I mean that literally.

A Jewel on the Côte d’Azur

Menton is the last French pearl before Italy – and a true beauty.
With its pastel-colored old town, fragrant gardens and sea views, it draws you in instantly.
No wonder painters, poets and citrus lovers feel right at home here.

Lemon Love, Not Celebrity Buzz

No movie stars are worshipped here – but lemons? Oh yes. They’re celebrated, carved, decorated and paraded through the streets.
And honestly, that makes Menton even more charming. Who needs red carpets when everything shines in sunny yellow?

The Lemon Festival – La Fête du Citron

Every February, everything revolves around citrus.
Floats made entirely of lemons and oranges roll through town, and massive sculptures draw thousands of visitors.
It’s wild, colorful – and it smells amazing.

Pure Mediterranean Way of Life

Life here happens outdoors: in plazas, cafés, along the promenade.
Menton isn’t loud – it’s gentle. Not posh, but warm-hearted.
The perfect place to breathe deep – with a glass of Pastis in hand and your eyes on the sea.

In the Footsteps of the Citrus Fruit

Lemons are more than decoration – they’re part of the city’s soul.
In Menton’s gardens, citrus trees grow in historic estates.
In restaurants, you’ll find everything from lemon risotto to lemon beer.
And in the little shops? Souvenirs that really taste like sunshine.

Travel Tips & Personal Impressions

  • Don’t miss: Jardin Serre de la Madone – a botanical gem.
  • Treat yourself: Tarte au Citron from a local bakery – so good, you won’t want to share.
  • Take a walk: Climb the old town stairs to the basilica – the view is worth it.
  • Extra tip: Visit Menton outside festival season for a quieter, more relaxed experience – the city has charm all year round.

My conclusion: Menton, you’re a bit eccentric. And I love that about you.
Honestly, you surprised us – with citrus wonders, sunny vibes and a festival that had real energy.
Peace and quiet? Not so much. And parking? An adventure of its own.
But maybe that’s what fits this place best: colorful, lively, slightly crazy – and just utterly lovable.

We’ll be back. Maybe with more time. Definitely with less car.
